Light of the Great Mystery showcases award-winning photographer Craig Varjabedian's stunning Native American portraits from his Native Light Photo Collaboration project and his artistry of the photographic medium.
The 36-page portfolio measures 8.3 x 11.7-inches and is signed by the photographer. This new edition includes twelve additional photographs. Light of the Great Mystery includes an essay by the photographer about the images and how they came into being. A missive by Marquel Musgrave from the Pueblo of Nambé speaks about the resiliency of Native American people and the importance of ancient wisdom as a cure for an ailing world. The work was created to honor the legacy of Native American people and their culture.
"The faces of the Native American people I photograph reveal to me a profound sense of the sacred. These people are descendants of those I first encountered in images by photographer Edward Curtis that I admired in a photo history class long ago. I remember being deeply moved by what I saw projected on the screen that day . . ."
~ Craig Varjabedian (from the photographer's essay)
“The greatest impact of this project lies in the collaborative approach to each photo-partnering subject and artist-that shifts that power paradigm of the traditional visual representation of Native American people in American art, updating outmoded ideas about Native cultural identity and representation.”
–Marquel Musgrave, Nambé Owingeh
"Craig Varjabedian's photography captures, with arresting clarity, the ineffable whispers of time and spirit layered deep in New Mexico's cultural landscape. Through the artful combination of his compassionate eye and technical virtuosity, he evokes the past in the present and the holy in the everyday."
~ Catherine Whitney, Director of Curatorial Affairs, The Honolulu Museum of Art
